Do the books want Messi and Argentina to repeat as champs?

Copa America 2024 Overview/Futures Report
Soccer’s second biggest continental tournament is coming to the US for the second time! Defending champs Argentina kick us off tonight in the opener with Canada at 8 PM ET as they look to repeat.
Below, we’ll give you a brief overview of the competition, along with who the professionals (sharps) are betting and who the liabilities are for the sportsbooks. Last week, we gave a general overview of how to approach betting soccer. We’ll have up to the minute content all over our Twitter and Instagram all tournament.
⚽️ Competition Overview
Typically, this tournament is contested with ten South American nations and it held on that continent. This year, they’ve added six North American nations and is being hosted in the US. Those 16 nations are divided into four groups of four. Each teams plays three games in this stage, one against each other team. You get three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. Eight teams then advance to the knockout stage, which has a traditional Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Final.
The groups are below.
The top two teams in each group will advance.
The Quarterfinal matchups would be:
1A vs. 2B
1B vs. 2A
1C vs. 2D
1D vs. 2C
Then the first two winners play eachother in the semifinals, etc.
In a unique change, you’d notice that the teams in Groups A/B cannot meet teams in Groups C/D until the Final. That’s to ensure that the two big potential rivalry matchups (Argentina-Brazil and US-Mexico) don’t happen until the Final. It also might mean that some teams might have an easier path to the Final.
The Favorites
The favorites are: defending Copa America and World Cup champs Argentina +175, perennial powers Brazil +225, Uruguay +475, and Colombia +1003, and finally the host USA +1400.
Longshots typically don’t win Copa America, but, some of them are Mexico is +2191, Canada is +5018, and Peru is +6623.
🔪 The Professional Bettors
The professional bettors (sharps) are betting on::
🇧🇷 Brazil +225
🇺🇾 Uruguay +475
Because of the the way the groups are split up, they’d meet in either the quarterfinal or the semifinal. So only one of them can make the Final. Something to keep in mind.
🎰 The Sportsbook Liabilities
The main liability for the sportsbooks are:
🇲🇽 Mexico +2191
🇺🇸 United States +1400
Another borderline liability is Argentina. The US and Mexico are always popular in these tournaments, and their long odds are creating the liability. Argentina is also popular because of Messi, but they have relatively short odds which is keeping the liability low. These three should attract match action as well. The books would want these three in the knockout stages to keep betting interest high, but, they don’t want them to win. Their dream matchup would be Argentina vs. Brazil with Brazil winning.
Wrap Up
The NBA Finals have ended. The Stanley Cup Finals will end this weekend. We’re starting to enter the dog days of summer. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to bet on. With the ongoing Euros and this tournament here to occupy the sporting schedule, we’re going to be all in on soccer! I hope you find this report helpful along with the betting strategies. Best of luck!
